Ovulation is very important for a woman as it is the determining factor in getting pregnant.
Ovulation is the process in the menstrual cycle by which a mature ovarian follicle raptures and discharges an ovum also known as an oocyte, female gamete, or casually an egg that participates in reproduction.
Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary. The lining of the uterus thickens to prepare for a fertilised egg. If no conception occurs, the uterine lining as well as blood will be shed. The shedding of an unfertilised egg and uterine wall is the time of menstruation.
When menstrual cycle begins, estrogen levels are low. A dominant follicle will release a mature egg and the others will disintegrate. The high level of estrogen will tell the hypothalamus and pituitary gland that there is a mature egg.
A luteinising (LH) is then released. The LH surge causes the egg to burn through the ovary wall within 24-36 hours and begin its journey down the fallopian tube for fertilisation.
The follicle from which the egg was released is called the corpus luteum, and it will release progesterone that helps thicken and prepare the uterine lining for implantation.
If an egg is fertilised, the corpus luteum will continue to produce progesterone for a developing pregnancy until the placenta takes over.
If fertilisation does not occur the egg dissolves after 24 hours.
At this time the hormone levels will decrease and the uterine lining will begin to shed about 12-16 days from ovulation. This is menstrual period and the cycle comes back to day 1 of your cycle. The journey then begins all over again.
The time of ovulation is one of the most important things a woman should understand about her body, since it is the determining factor in getting pregnant and preventing pregnancy.
